jon & i went to albania

we caught old mercededes buses across the country for 10 days. got soaked in the torrential rain twice. made friends with olf albanian women on the beach. swam in the ionian sea. ate mussels. climbed mountains. ate copious amounts of surprisingly good pizza and splashed out on fresh fish. saw censored art in the museum in tirane. visited the national museum and saw a moving tribute to those who died under the communist reign. drank white russians with two swiss guys in a revolving bar. bought hand-knitted socks.
this is a picture of the valley between girokastra (a beautiful old mountain town that cascades down the mountain side and is topped with an old fort and citadel) and greece...it's taken as our bus began to climb into the mountains, two hours of winding single-lane roads with terrible finishes, weaving their way to the ionian sea. the bumps you can see are bunkers, built by the communists in case of invasion. now they serve to create patchwork patterns, collect rubbish and mark boundaries of the land.
